天照大神は、日本神話における最高神であり、伊邪那岐命（イザナギ）が黄泉の国から戻って禊を行った際、その左目から誕生したと伝えられています。太陽を司る神として高天原を治め、世界に光と秩序をもたらす存在とされました。また、孫である邇邇芸命（ニニギノミコト）を地上へ送り出す天孫降臨の神話へとつながっていきます。この系譜により、皇室の祖神とされ、天皇の正統性を支える基盤ともなりました。

Birth
Amaterasu Ōmikami is the supreme deity in Japanese mythology; it is said that she was born from the left eye of Izanagi-no-Mikoto when he returned from the Land of the Dead and performed a purification ritual. As the deity who presides over the sun, she ruled Takamagahara and was regarded as the source of light and order in the world. This leads to the myth of the Descent of the Heavenly Grandchild, in which she sent her grandson, Ninigi-no-Mikoto, down to the earth. Through this lineage, she became the ancestral deity of the Imperial Family and the foundation supporting the Emperor’s legitimacy.

Mythology
Among the myths surrounding Amaterasu Omikami, the story of “Ama-no-Iwato” (the Cave of Heavenly Rock) is particularly famous. Distressed by the violent behavior of her younger brother, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, Amaterasu Omikami hid herself inside a cave. As a result, the world lost its light and was enveloped in darkness. The other gods, faced with this crisis, worked together to devise a plan to lure Amaterasu Omikami out. Ame-no-Uzume performed a dance, and the gods raised their voices in laughter to create the illusion of merriment outside. When Amaterasu, intrigued by the commotion, slightly opened the cave entrance, the god of strength, Tajikarao, seized the moment to pull the door wide open, and light returned to the world. This myth symbolizes the resurrection of the sun and the restoration of order, holding great significance in Japanese culture. It is also notable for highlighting the importance of cooperation and wisdom among the gods.

Furthermore, as a symbol of light, life, and order, Amaterasu Omikami is often referenced in various contexts even in modern times. For example, her presence is repeatedly depicted in traditional Japanese events, literature, and works of art.
